Community Wealth Collaborative Participants
Community Wealth Ventures, Inc.
conducted a rigorous screening of nonprofit organizations in
the Hartford metropolitan area. The following eight organizations
were selected from the applicant pool to participate in the
first round of the project.
The Bushnell Center for the
Performing Arts
www.bushnell.org
The
organization:
The Bushnell operates two theaters and presents Broadway plays,
orchestral pieces, and other performing arts events. The
Bushnell’s vision is to present, create, inspire, and share
the best in the performing arts; and in partnership with others,
deploy the arts as major catalysts to advance education, to
promote economic development, and to build a sense of community
in central Connecticut.
The
venture:
The Bushnell will refine and implement Artventures, an arts and
education program designed to serve the needs of older adults.
Artventures is a suite of arts programs for aging adults that
includes hands-on workshops, talent development instruction, and
arts enrichment activities.

Connecticut
Housing Investment Fund (CHIF)

The
organization:
CHIF is a statewide housing Community Development Financial
Institution providing flexible financing, loan servicing, and
technical services to developers of affordable housing and
neighborhood revitalization projects in Connecticut.
The
venture:
CHIF will expand and diversify its loan servicing and third
party administration activities.

The
organization:
The mission of Co-Opportunity is to enhance the quality of life
of low- and moderate-income individuals as well as their
capacity as stakeholders in their community by providing
services in the areas of housing, workforce development, and
community and economic development. One of
Co-Opportunity’s signature programs is YouthBuild Hartford, a
program that acts as a subcontractor to local developers of
low/moderate income housing. This program has completed
work on over 60 units of new housing and 60 units of renovated
housing since its inception in 1997, and provides hands-on
carpentry training to low-income 18-24 year olds from Hartford.
The
venture:
Co-Opportunity will leverage its experience with YouthBuild to
develop a home improvement construction company that can provide
services to homeowners or other contractors as a subcontractor.

Harriet
Beecher Stowe Center

The
organization:
The Stowe Center’s mission is to preserve and interpret
Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Hartford home and the Center’s
historic collections, create a forum for vibrant discussion of
her life and work, and inspire individuals to embrace and
emulate her commitment to social justice by effecting positive
change.
The
venture:
The Stowe Center will draw on its extensive collections to
develop products for sale through the museum shop, catalogs, and
the internet.

Jewish
Family Services

The
organization:
Jewish Family Services is a non-sectarian, multi-service
organization that addresses the social service and mental health
needs of people in Greater Hartford. Its services include
counseling, a parent education program, assistance to
refugee-status immigrants from the former Soviet Union, a
program for Holocaust survivors, services to the elderly and a
variety of workshops and support groups.
The
venture:
Jewish Family Services will expand its Homemaker Referral
Program, a service that provides clients with access to a
pre-screened pool of qualified care-givers.

Manchester Area Conference of
Churches (MACC)

The
organization:
MACC is the primary social services agency serving the greater
Manchester area. Governed by a consortium of 20 churches,
MACC offers access to services that provide for basic needs
including food, shelter and clothing through the collaborative
work of member churches and other organizations.
The
venture:
MACC currently operates the Church Mouse Thrift Shoppe, a small
store that provides high-quality used clothing and housewares to
the community. MACC plans to expand and grow this venture
during the Collaborative.

The organization:
Riverfront Recapture was created to restore public access to the
Connecticut River through parks and recreational facilities,
make the riverfront an attractive destination, and use
riverfront improvements as a catalyst for jobs and economic
revitalization. Over the past 23 years, Riverfront
Recapture has generated a number of programs in the parks,
including ropes courses and group challenges, boating activities
including crew, canoeing and dragon boat racing, field sports
programs and trails for hiking and biking. In 2002,
Riverfront Recapture completed a new boathouse, which serves as
the focal point for many of these activities.
The venture:
Riverfront Recapture will develop a venture that will package
many of its current activities to create complete team-building
and other outdoor experiences for corporate teams,
conventioneers, community organizations and other groups.

Urban League of Greater
Hartford

The
organization:
The Urban League of Greater Hartford seeks to enable African
Americans and other residents of the Hartford Region to secure
economic self-reliance, parity and power and civil rights.
Its programs include initiatives in education, housing and
economic development, community health, training and employment,
and youth and family services.
The
venture:
The League proposes a web based job search tool that will link
employers in the Greater Hartford Region with high quality
diverse job candidates.
