Social Franchise
Ventures (SFV) is an operating unit of CWV that
supports nonprofits in creating social
franchises. SFV
identifies, develops and fosters strategic relationships with
qualified nonprofit organizations to pursue franchise
companies that are interested in partnerships to promote
social change.
The
genesis for SFV was a comprehensive research study completed
by Community Wealth Ventures and the International
Franchise Association Education Foundation (IFAEF). The
final report, Nonprofit Owned Franchises: A Strategic
Business Approach, concluded that franchised businesses
offer a strong opportunity for entrepreneurial nonprofit
organizations seeking to grow self-generated revenues.
SFV management
recognizes two distinct yet unmet needs:
SFV
works on behalf
of qualified nonprofit organizations to bridge the gaps with
appropriate franchisors in order to launch mutually beneficial
franchised businesses. Nonprofit organizations with
potential to succeed with a franchise include those that have
work training programs and/or youth development initiatives,
those that have a strong centralized affiliate network and
those with a stable and established presence. SFV looks
to facilitate business partnerships between these nonprofits
and franchise companies that are privately owned, well
established, and have an executive team interested in
developing and supporting social franchises.
SFV offers the
following services to qualified nonprofit organizations:
-
Research
& Evaluation: SFV can identify potential
franchise concepts for its clients through
extensive research in the franchise community and can
evaluate the pros and cons of each potential relationship.
Once a franchise is identified, SFV assists the nonprofit
in negotiating the franchise relationship, reviewing
potential leased sites, and developing a business plan.
-
Dedicated
Support: SFV assigns a business counselor to each
client. The business counselor provides strategic
support for the start-up of each franchise site, the
ongoing relationship between the partners, and assistance
in identifying and resolving issues, obstacles and
opportunities. Support will include on-site visits,
monthly report monitoring and an annual business planning
session.
